1. Check Tire Pressure (Including Spare): Use a reliable tire pressure gauge to ensure all tires, including the spare, are inflated to the manufacturer’s recommended PSI—not the maximum pressure on the sidewall. Check when tires are cold to get the most accurate reading.

2. Inspect Tread Depth: Use a tread depth gauge or the quarter test. Insert a quarter into the tread with Washington’s head pointing down. If you see the top of his head, it’s time to plan for a replacement. A penny test showing Lincoln’s full head means the tire tread is dangerously low and needs immediate replacement.

3. Examine Sidewalls for Damage: Look for cuts, bulges, cracks, or embedded objects in the sidewalls. These can compromise tire structure and lead to blowouts, especially dangerous at highway speeds.

4. Check Tire Age: Look for the DOT code on the sidewall. The last four digits show the week and year of manufacture. Tires older than six years should be evaluated for replacement, regardless of tread depth. Replace any tires over ten years old, even if they appear in good shape.

5. Monitor Wear Patterns and Alignment: Uneven tread wear may indicate improper alignment, underinflation, or suspension issues. If you notice one side wearing faster than the other, have your alignment inspected and corrected by a technician.

6. Ensure Proper Tire Balance and Rotation: Unbalanced tires can cause vibration and uneven wear. Have your tires balanced and rotated every 5,000-8,000 miles to promote even wear and maximize tire lifespan.

7. Inspect Valve Stems and Caps: Ensure all valve stems are intact and fitted with caps. Valve caps help prevent air leakage and keep dirt or debris out of the valve core.

8. Check Spare Tire Readiness: Your spare is your backup in emergencies—make sure it’s properly inflated, undamaged, and not past its age limit.

9. Secure All Lug Nuts or Bolts: Confirm all lug nuts are tightened to spec. Loose or missing lug nuts can cause wheel detachment, especially during long-distance travel or rugged terrain driving.

10. Carry Emergency Tools: Have a tire repair kit, jack, lug wrench, and portable air compressor in your vehicle. Knowing how to use them can make all the difference in a roadside emergency.
